5-A-SIDE EMIRATES MONDAY MAY 14TH 2007 Finely tuned athletes met at McDonalds for breakfast on a wet Monday morning, hoping that the tournament would not be rained off like last year. The squad was a mixture of youth and experience (old grey haired/bald men with beer bellies). Steve Baker warm up, 3 mile run up and down The Holloway Road trying to find "studs" (not sure if he was looking for good looking men or something for his football boots! When we arrived we were elated to find the tournament would go ahead despite heavy rain for the whole of the journey. The players were split into 4 groups of 7 teams, which consisted of supporters from Ireland, France, Malta, Hungary, USA, Scotland, Italy, Denmark as well as all over England. Whilst trying to act as ball boy, one of the highlights of the day was Alan Wagers' "Arse Over Tit" fall on the edge of the pitch. I think he thought he was in the box doing a Drogba dive. Our Group consisted of East Midlands, Dover, Gloucester, East Sussex, Denmark and Tralle. We played 6 games of which we won 1, drew 2 and lost 3. All three defeats were only by the odd goal, but we did manage to finish strong with a 3-1 win over Denmark. There was a great team spirit under the management of Lee Wager and some great performances by Steve and Aaron Baker, Aidan Mc' Clure, Andy McManus, Mick Pryce, Alan Wager and Shaun Arrowsmith. We had the honour of using The Away Dressing Room, a bit different from your usual Sunday Morning League Council changing rooms. What an awesome day, enjoyed by everyone who took part. Something to bore the pants off friends, family and work colleagues for years to come with "Do you know I've played at The Emirates and scored a goal as well". Many thanks to our hard core supporters who made the trip down with us, all five of them. The eventual winners were Herts / Beds who beat the USA in the final, who had youth on their side. Thanks to Mick Pryce for driving the minibus and getting us there and back in one piece BACK TO HOME PAGE |
